Sound problems

Postby private_pile on Sun Jul 16, 2006 7:48 pm

I have an intel ac97 surround chip on my motherboard. One day I discovered that I only had sound on the left. I checked the speakers on the front audio jack and they were fine, both worked.

So here I am having to plug in my speakers into my front audio jack because my rear audio jack broke. And then the front one went. If I wiggle the jack I can here sound from both speakers, so the speakers are fine and so is the sound chip. The connections for the jacks are worn. Any idea what I can do about it.

At the moment I'm running my sound through the microphone jack, which is hardly what I want. This also means I have no sound in FreeBSD.

help!?

Have you tried re-installing the sound card drivers? Tried an update?

If the cables are worn either replace the cables or if the cables are perm attached to the speakers then replace the speakers.

If you have an extra sound card lying around, test the speakers.

If all else fails, take it in(if still under warranty) to your supplier or replace motherboard.

If you have a solder iron, those jacks are rather cheap, probably about R5 from most electronic stores. You could also get a cable with a jack pre made-up and just replace the whole cable. Test it with another set of speakers?
